Omar Apollo’s Live For Me EP might’ve arrived in October 2023, but it still feels just as haunting, tender, and timeless now as it did then.
Released between his Grammy-nominated debut album, Ivory, and his sophomore project, God Said No, the four-track EP captured a very specific emotional space in Omar’s artistry; one rooted in grief, identity, and personal transformation, yet still delivered with the kind of beauty only he can make feel effortless.
What makes Live For Me so striking is how intentional it feels. This wasn’t just a collection of songs; it was a deeply personal release that gave listeners a glimpse into a vulnerable chapter of Omar’s life. Tracks like “Angel” stand out as especially emotional and brave, with Omar describing the song at the time as something he needed to let go of creatively and personally.
“This was a dark time for me, I’ll let the song speak for itself,” he shared on Instagram stories. “I don’t feel this way anymore but it was important topic to let go and write about for me. Produced by me and my brother @oscarsantandermusic.” That level of honesty is part of what makes his work so resonant; he doesn’t just write songs, he documents feelings.
The title track itself has its own special origin story. Omar revealed that “Live For Me” began as a poem while he was on his Prototype tour in 2022, which makes the final project feel even more intimate and lived-in.
There’s a poetic quality running through the entire EP, from the imagery to the arrangement to the emotional weight of every line. It feels less like an era designed for spectacle and more like an artist carefully translating private pain into something universal.
That said, Live For Me still had its own striking visual identity. During the era, Omar created the “Live For Me” experience, a collaboration with lighting and spatial designer Johanna Grawunder that turned the project into a highly visual, interactive art installation in New York.
It was a perfect extension of the music: immersive, elegant, and emotionally charged, giving fans another way to step inside the world Omar built around the EP.
And even now, the project still lingers because it feels like a key turning point in his catalog. It sits in that rare space where an artist is fully in control of their voice but still clearly evolving, still pushing deeper into themselves. Omar has always had a way of making vulnerability feel cinematic, and Live For Me is one of the clearest examples of that gift.
Of course, fans have been holding onto his January comments to Esquire, when he confirmed that new music was on the way and sounded genuinely excited about it. “Oh my gosh, yes, bro. It’s insane. I’m very, very, very excited,” he said.
“You know what’s messed up? I’m recording some of these songs and they’re so hard to sing. I need to start rehearsal or I’m going to have to drop the key live. I don’t know about everyone’s process, but I like to punch in a lot.” That kind of tease is exactly why fans are still watching closely.
