Pop music doesn’t always need to be serious. Sometimes it can just be loud, ridiculous, sexy and make you want to have a good time.
Enter Novul: the French-Canadian, Los Angeles-based pop artist is back with her new single “Grilled Cheese,” featuring and produced by NASHUP, aka Nash Overstreet of Hot Chelle Rae. And yes, before you ask, the song really is called “Grilled Cheese,” but somehow, it works.
“Grilled Cheese” is the kind of electropop song that feels made for getting ready with your friends before going out, even if the night ultimately ends with everyone back in the kitchen making food at an ungodly hour.
There’s an element of not taking yourself too seriously at the center of it all, which feels pretty refreshing in a pop landscape where every era can sometimes feel like it needs a 40-page explanation. Novul would rather give us diamonds, drinks, high heels and grilled cheese… we support this message!
For Novul, the ridiculousness is intentional. “‘Grilled Cheese’ is really about not taking being hot so seriously,” she says of the track in a press release, describing its world as glamorous, chaotic and “a little ridiculous.” She also incorporates her French-Canadian background into the song by bringing some French into the record.
But her explanation of the song might sum up its entire attitude best: whether you’re staying out with your friends until 6 A.M. or staying home blasting music while making grilled cheese in your kitchen, you’re the party.
Okay, wait… actually love that. There’s something freeing about a pop song that isn’t asking you to be the coolest person in the room. Go out, stay home, dress up, be messy, and eat the fucking sandwich… who cares?
