Diamond Cafe is giving “Angel Dust” a whole new sound.
The rising pop and R&B artist is the latest musician to join Los Angeles-based music series Songs with Strings, delivering a live string quartet rendition of his newest single, “Angel Dust.” And if you’ve already had the original on repeat, you’re going to want to hear this version.
Filmed live on Melrose Ave, the performance strips away the song’s original electro-funk production and completely reimagines it through strings, with Diamond Cafe on vocals and wholesoul providing the quartet arrangement.
The result gives “Angel Dust” an entirely different atmosphere while putting Diamond’s vocals front and center. That’s exactly what makes Songs with Strings such a cool concept; the Los Angeles music series pairs emerging artists with a live string quartet, allowing them to revisit their original songs through a completely different musical lens.
Diamond Cafe now joins a growing list of artists who have participated in the series, including Flyana Boss, Cure for Paranoia and India Carney.
For “Angel Dust,” that means taking a track rooted in sleek electro-funk and seeing what happens when you trade the production. Sometimes the best way to hear a song differently is to completely tear up the original blueprint.
