If you’re already looking ahead to your next trip to the theater, there are plenty of exciting films on the way over the next few months. From horror and psychological thrillers to sharp comedy, prestige drama, and a long-awaited sequel, this upcoming slate has something for just about every kind of movie fan.
Ice Cream Man
Eli Roth is heading back into horror with Ice Cream Man, and the first teaser already makes it clear this one is going for full nightmare fuel. Set in the seemingly perfect summer town of Bayleen Bay, the film follows a sinister ice cream truck that brings terrifying chaos after serving local kids. With a release date of August 7th in select venues, this one looks primed to be a late-summer scare.
Passenger
Arriving in theaters on May 22nd, Passenger takes a dark supernatural turn after a young couple witnesses a gruesome highway accident and realizes they haven’t actually escaped the scene. A demonic presence called the Passenger begins hunting them down, giving André Øvredal’s film a chilling premise that sounds tailor-made for horror fans who like their dread slow-burning and relentless.
The Devil Wears Prada 2
One of the most buzzed-about upcoming releases is The Devil Wears Prada 2, which opens on May 1st. The sequel brings Miranda Priestly back into the spotlight as retirement starts to loom, setting up a reunion with Andy Sachs and a showdown with Emily Charlton, now her rival. Directed by David Frankel, the film already has major event-movie energy simply because of the characters involved.
Mother Mary
David Lowery’s Mother Mary sounds like one of the more emotionally charged titles on the list. Starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, the film drops this Friday and centers on an iconic pop star whose comeback performance stirs up old wounds when she reunites with her estranged best friend/former costume designer.
Backrooms
Hitting theaters on May 29th, Backrooms taps into one of the internet’s most unsettling modern myths. Produced by A24 and based on the viral YouTube found-footage series, the film follows a therapist trying to locate a patient lost in the eerie alternate dimension. With Kane Parsons directing and Will Soodik writing, this one has the kind of creepy, internet-native concept that could make it a breakout horror hit.
These five movies cover a lot of ground, but they all have one thing in common: they already feel like conversation starters. Whether you want scares, spectacle, or something with a little more prestige, the next few months are stacked. Which ones are on your watch list?
