Grab your starfish hair clips and get ready for a serious dose of nostalgia because Aquamarine is officially making a comeback!

According to Variety, a series adaptation of the beloved 2006 mermaid film has received a pilot order at Disney+, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for one of the most underrated movies of the 2000s.

And yes, there’s even more exciting news! Emma Roberts, who starred in the original film as Claire Brown, is set to guest star in the pilot and will also serve as an executive producer on the project. Honestly? It wouldn’t feel right without her.

The outlet reported that the upcoming series comes from writer Sarah Watson, while original Aquamarine director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum is attached to direct and executive produce. Original film producer Susan Cartsonis will also return as an executive producer.

The new series won’t simply retell the original movie, however. According to the synopsis: “When teenaged Coral moves to a dreamy seaside town, she begins unraveling the truth behind her mother’s disappearance—and discovers her mother was a mermaid, awakening magical powers in Coral just as secrets beneath the waves threaten to surface.”

A new story, new characters, and an entirely new mystery? Sign me up! For those of us who grew up in the 2000s, Aquamarine wasn’t just another movie; it was a literal sleepover staple. The film became a cult favorite thanks to its charming story, beachy aesthetic, and unforgettable performances from Emma Roberts, JoJo, and Sara Paxton.

Nearly two decades later, it’s amazing to see the franchise getting another chance to make waves. And with original creative forces involved and Emma Roberts returning to the world of Aquamarine, this revival already feels like it’s in good hands.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be spending the rest of the day wondering if we’ll get any more surprise appearances from the original cast… because honestly? Mermaids are SO back.
