Basil, come in! If you’ve spent the last two decades wondering whether we’d ever see Austin Powers return to the big screen, I have some very groovy news for you.
During Trevor Noah’s World Cup Watch Party, a fan asked the question that has been on everyone’s mind for years: Will there be an Austin Powers 4? Mike Myers didn’t give a long explanation, a teaser trailer, or even a hint about the plot. Instead, he gave the simplest answer possible: “Yes.” And honestly? That’s all I needed to hear.
For years, rumors about a fourth Austin Powers film have come and gone, but hearing Mike himself confirm that it’s happening feels like the most promising update we’ve received yet. While details remain under wraps, we can finally celebrate knowing the franchise won’t be frozen in the early 2000s forever.
Of course, as soon as I heard the news, my mind immediately went somewhere else:… can we get Britney Spears back? Pop culture fans will remember that Britney made a memorable appearance in Goldmember as herself.
Her cameo became one of the most talked-about moments in the film and remains a favorite among fans more than twenty years later. If Austin Powers 4 is truly bringing back the franchise’s signature mix of celebrity cameos, nostalgia, and outrageous comedy, a Britney return feels like a no-brainer.
The Austin Powers series became one of the biggest comedy franchises of its generation, with Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and Austin Powers: Goldmember collectively earning more than $815 million worldwide. Not bad for a spy who can’t seem to stay out of trouble!
What’s even more impressive is that both The Spy Who Shagged Me and Goldmember managed to outperform the James Bond films released during their respective years at the domestic box office. The franchise also received more than 40 award nominations and took home over 20 wins, proving Austin Powers was much more than a comedy fad.
Adding to the excitement is the fact that director Jay Roach has previously expressed his enthusiasm about returning. Speaking with Deadline in 2020, Roach said, “I’m always game for anything he wants to do. He’s a genius and he helped me get started and it was a blast.”
We don’t know if a script exists, when filming will begin, who else might return, or when the movie could hit theaters… but after years of speculation, one thing is finally clear: Austin Powers 4 is happening.
And that’s enough to make me want to dust off the velvet suits, crank up the ’60s music, and start practicing my best “Yeah, baby!” all over again.
