Ellie Goulding might’ve just released a new album, but if a new rumor is true, she could already have another one waiting… and this time, she’ll be doing things entirely on her own terms.
Ellie released her new album, I Know Too Much, on September 4th through Polydor Records. The 10-track project finds the singer entering an incredibly personal chapter of her career, exploring themes of love, power, trust, instinct and everything she’s experienced through several major changes in her life.
However, something about the album’s release immediately stood out to fans: the lack of fanfare surrounding it. Despite I Know Too Much being a brand-new Ellie Goulding album, her label’s social media accounts didn’t appear to acknowledge its release when it dropped.
For an artist who has spent more than 15 years building a global career with massive records including “Lights,” “Burn,” “Love Me Like You Do” and “On My Mind,” seeing a new Ellie Goulding album seemingly arrive without the promotional push fans expected was surprising.
Now, there could be much more happening behind the scenes. A rumor shared on X Saturday claimed that Goulding could be preparing to release an “anti-album” titled We Know Too Much as an independent artist on Monday, reportedly following the expiration of her current record deal.
And while it’s important to stress that Goulding hasn’t confirmed the rumor, even the possibility has fans paying attention. The rumored title alone is brilliant.
Going from I Know Too Much to We Know Too Much would immediately transform the conversation surrounding this era. If the speculation is true, it could represent an artist taking ownership of her story after years inside the major-label system and choosing to begin whatever comes next on her own terms.
And honestly? We’d love to see it. Goulding has been remarkably open about the fact that I Know Too Much comes from a period of enormous change. The album follows several transformative years in her personal and professional life including the end of her marriage, becoming a mother for the second time, a new relationship and a legal dispute involving her former management.
Musically, she’s changing, too. Rather than recreating the dance-heavy world of 2023’s Higher Than Heaven, I Know Too Much leans further into guitars, acoustic elements and intimate songwriting. It feels less concerned with chasing the biggest possible pop moment and more interested in allowing Ellie to tell the truth about where she is today.
That makes the mystery surrounding We Know Too Much even more intriguing. There have also been noticeable changes surrounding the album’s live rollout. Ellie cancelled an intimate September 5th album-release performance, while other launch dates have been moved or altered.
Whether those changes have anything to do with the rumor remains unknown, and fans shouldn’t connect dots that Goulding herself hasn’t connected yet, but something clearly has people talking.
If tomorrow comes and We Know Too Much turns out to be nothing more than an internet rumor, we’ll still have a deeply personal new Ellie Goulding album to celebrate.
But if Monday comes and she really does surprise-release an independent companion project? That’d be one hell of a way to start a new chapter.
