Well, Angels… she warned us.
After teasing that “something horny is coming ;),” Charli XCX has officially released her latest single, “Wink Wink,” and let’s just say she absolutely understood the assignment.
The track marks the third offering from her forthcoming album, Music, Fashion, Film, following previously released singles “Rock Music” and “SS26.” If those songs hinted at the direction of this new era, “Wink Wink” kicks the door wide open.
It’s cheeky. It’s playful. It’s wildly self-aware, and yes… it’s very, very horny. On the track, Charli sings that she’s “not a bad girl anymore”… wink, wink. She jokes that maybe she “fucked your dad,” reveals that her friend told her she dressed “like a slut,” and how she now shops at APC because, apparently, people can change.
Or can they? That’s really the genius of “Wink Wink.” The song constantly plays with image, perception, and reinvention while never fully committing to any one version of itself. It’s campy, tongue-in-cheek, and impossible to take entirely at face value.
In other words? It’s peak Charli XCX. One of the things that has always made Charli such an exciting artist is her ability to balance sincerity and satire. One minute she’s delivering a vulnerable lyric, and the next she’s making you laugh with an outrageous one-liner.
“Wink Wink” feels like another reminder that nobody is doing pop quite like her. As if the release of a new single wasn’t enough, Charli also recently revealed another intriguing detail about Music, Fashion, Film while appearing on French television this week.
“There is one collaboration on the album. But you won’t be able to guess,” she teased. “I would bet money on you not guessing.” When pressed further, she doubled down. “You could have 1,000 chances and you still wouldn’t guess.” Naturally, the internet is already in full detective mode. Who could it be? A pop legend? An indie darling? Someone completely unexpected? With Charli, literally anything feels possible.
As we inch closer to the release of Music, Fashion, Film, one thing has become crystal clear: this era is shaping up to be every bit as unpredictable, stylish, and fascinating as its creator. And if “Wink Wink” is any indication, we’re all in for a very fun ride.
