Charli XCX has officially kicked off her next era with “Rock Music,” out now alongside a killer new video directed by Aidan Zamiri.
The track marks the first release from her forthcoming eighth studio album, and while the title might have caused some confusion, Charli already cleared it up last week: this is not a rock album, even if the song name and energy are making everyone do a double-take.
The video is pure Charli chaos in the best way. She moves through a black-and-white cityscape while making out, chain smoking, and giving full visual commitment before the scene shifts into color right as the chorus hits and she makes the “rock music” declaration. It’s dramatic, stylish, a little messy, and exactly the kind of thing that reminds everyone why Charli’s rollout moments always hit so hard.
Coming off the massive success of Brat, the new single feels like the start of another bold swing rather than a repeat of what came before. Charli has already proven she can keep evolving without losing the edge that made people obsess over her in the first place, and “Rock Music” feels like the beginning of another one of those eras.
She’ll also be taking this momentum to the stage this year with sets at Lollapalooza in Chicago in July, Outside Lands in San Francisco in August, and Austin City Limits in October. With a new single out now, a standout video, and festival dates ahead, Charli is once again making it very clear that she’s not here to play it safe.
