Fall in New England is one of the most beautiful times of the year, but as much as we love the colorful foliage, cooler temperatures and everything autumn has to offer, there’s one thing we all know is right around the corner: winter.

And if you’ve lived in Massachusetts long enough, you know that waiting until the first snowstorm to prepare your car isn’t exactly the best idea!

With colder temperatures approaching, Springfield-based City Tire is encouraging drivers throughout New England to start thinking about winter road safety now, rather than waiting until snow and ice become part of the daily commute.

According to the family-owned automotive service company, October is an ideal time to evaluate your tires and determine whether they’re equipped to handle the changing conditions ahead.

WHY PREPARING EARLY MATTERS

While many drivers associate winter tire safety with snowstorms, colder temperatures alone can affect tire performance and pressure. Adequate tread depth is also essential for maintaining traction on wet, snowy and icy roads.

“Winter preparation starts before the first storm,” said Andy Bewsee, VP of operations at City Tire. “Drivers should consider the conditions they encounter regularly, especially if they travel rural roads, hills or early in the morning.”

City Tire also emphasizes the importance of understanding the differences between tire types. Winter tires are designed specifically for cold temperatures, snow and ice, while all-weather tires offer year-round use with stronger winter capabilities than traditional all-season tires.

And for anyone driving an all-wheel-drive vehicle, there’s another important reminder: while AWD can help with acceleration in slippery conditions, it doesn’t replace the traction provided by properly equipped tires.

HELPING NEW ENGLAND DRIVERS STAY SAFE

Founded in 1927, City Tire is a third-generation, family-owned business operating 10 locations throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire, including Amherst Tire Center, Lodge Tire and Seward’s Tires.

In addition to tire services, the company offers automotive maintenance and repairs, including alignments, brakes, inspections and preventative care.

As winter approaches, City Tire encourages drivers to schedule tire inspections before the seasonal rush and consider their vehicle, commute and typical road conditions when choosing the right tires.

Because while we can’t control when New England decides to deliver its first snowstorm, we can certainly do our part to be prepared.
