It’s hard to believe, but Casper first hit theaters on May 26th, 1995, and thirty-one years later, the beloved film is still as charming, spooky, and iconic as ever.
Starring Christina Ricci as Kat Harvey and Bill Pullman as Dr. James Harvey, the movie follows a young girl and her paranormal therapist father as they move into Whipstaff Manor, where they encounter Casper, the friendly ghost who’s been quietly haunting the mansion for years.
Directed by Brad Silberling and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Casper made cinematic history as the first feature film to star a fully computer-generated character in a leading role.
That alone makes it a landmark movie, but its mix of humor, heart, and ghostly nostalgia is what helped turn it into a lasting favorite for an entire generation.
The film was also a major commercial success, grossing well over its production budget and going on to win Favorite Movie at the 1996 Kids’ Choice Awards.
