A24 has dropped the first song from its upcoming pop-star drama Mother Mary, and it’s already setting the tone for a dark, glamorous soundtrack.
“Burial” is the debut single from the film’s seven-song album and is out now, arriving ahead of the full soundtrack’s release on April 17th via A24 Music. Sung entirely by Anne Hathaway in character, the soundtrack features music written and produced by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA twigs, who also appears in the film.
“Burial” marks Hathaway’s first big pop moment since her Les Misérables era, but this time she’s stepping into the glossy, extreme world of a fictional music icon. The song was co-written by Hathaway alongside Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and George Daniel, blending Charli’s razor-sharp pop instincts with Antonoff’s cinematic production style and Daniel’s moody, electronic edge.
Directed by David Lowery, Mother Mary follows a famous pop star (Hathaway) who reconnects with her estranged best friend and former stylist, played by Michaela Coel. Their reunion on the eve of a major comeback performance stirs up old wounds, shifting the story from fashion and fame into something much more emotional and unsettling. “Burial” channels that tension, feeling less like a straightforward “movie song” and more like an actual hit pulled from a superstar’s greatest-hits catalog.
To launch the single, A24 released a 30-second YouTube teaser titled Mother Mary – Greatest Hits (Official Album Teaser), which features Hathaway’s character performing live onstage in front of a roaring crowd. Quick-cut visuals show her in full pop-diva mode: spotlight glare, stylized choreography, and flashes of onstage vulnerability as “Burial” plays.
The teaser, paired with the song itself, marks the first major promotional push for Mother Mary since the film’s trailer dropped back in December, officially kicking off the campaign for both the movie and its soundtrack.
“Burial” is the lead offering from the Mother Mary soundtrack, which will include seven tracks sung entirely by Hathaway. Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA twigs are behind the songwriting and production, crafting a cohesive album that’s meant to feel like the real, in-world discography of a pop legend.
It’s an ambitious move that positions the project as both a film and a full-on pop era, blurring the line between character and artist.
Mother Mary releases theatrically on April 17th, with a wider nationwide expansion set for April 24th. Until then, “Burial” gives fans a taste of the world they’re about to enter: devotional, dramatic, and a little bit dangerous… exactly what you’d expect from an A24 pop saga.
