Kacey Musgraves is in her most honest era yet. The Grammy-winning star sat down with Indie Rocks to open up about her creative process, inspirations, and the sonic freedom behind her 2024 album Deeper Well.

“I think this is one of the most intimate albums I’ve ever made, if not the most,” Kacey shared, reflecting on how deeply personal her latest body of work feels.

A true genre chameleon, Kacey has never been afraid to mix sounds that others might keep apart. “Each record can sound different, but my approach to music is always the same: it has to feel right to me. No one convinces me to do something for no reason, and I’m fortunate to have collaborators who understand that,” she explained.

That balance between old and new is what makes her music so distinctly Kacey. “I love finding a balance between the traditional and the modern, making something familiar sound fresh. I use elements like pedal steel, banjo, or acoustic guitar, and I mix them with more current ones that may be unexpected. That contrast creates a sound that feels familiar but also new, something you might have never heard before.”

When it comes to lyrics, she pulls straight from life itself. “From being human, experiencing love, making mistakes, going through relationships. I often get ideas in the middle of a conversation or even an argument, and I have to jot them down on my phone,” she said.

Her albums, she explained, function like an open diary: “For me, inspiration comes from everyday life, from those small moments that seem insignificant but have magic. The more honest I am, the more I feel connected with my music. In the end, we all seek to recognize ourselves in the art we consume, and I think that’s where the true power of sharing lies.”

As for the future? Kacey’s curiosity is wide open. “I’d love to experiment more with R&B; I’m a fan of Sade, for example. I’m also really inspired by seeing where country intersects with other styles, like traditional Mexican music. And, honestly, I love reggae (laughs). I don’t know if I could make a reggae album, but it would be amazing to try.”

For now, fans can catch her live as she takes the stage tonight at Teatro Metropolitan in Mexico City, continuing her journey of bringing vulnerability and innovation to country, pop, and everything in between.
