Charli XCX has always been a superstar to me: from the mixtapes and club bangers to redefining what pop can sound like. But now? She’s proving she can take over Hollywood, too.

Her first film, Erupcja, just premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the reviews coming in are nothing short of spectacular. Directed by Pete Ohs and co-written by Ohs, Charli, Lena Góra, Jeremy O. Harris, and Will Madden, the film is already being hailed as one of the most exciting indie debuts of the year.

Set in Poland, Erupcja follows two women as they complicate their romantic lives. Nel, who works at a flower shop in Warsaw, finds her world shaken when her childhood friend Bethany arrives with a new boyfriend, and, oh yeah, a volcano erupts.

The synopsis alone sounds wild, but the buzz is all about how tender, magnetic, and surprisingly magical the movie feels.

Critics across the board are raving about Charli and her performance. The Hollywood Reporter praised her as “magnetic in a lovely, low-key ode to wanderlust, friendship and intimacy,” while AV Club called the film Pete Ohs’ best yet, describing it as “a messy, wise, realistic relationship story with a hint of magic, and a lot of Charli XCX.”

The Moveable Fest noted that the “360” singer shows her stage presence isn’t limited to music, while The Playlist was just as clear: “Charli XCX shows legit on-screen talent.” Even The New Yorker chimed in, pointing out that “she dominates the action with classical canniness, her energetic yet poised performance showing keen awareness that movie acting favors minimal strain.”

IndieWire highlighted the way the film lingers “because it understands how the self-centeredness of travel can cut both ways.” AV Club doubled down by saying that everything comes together beautifully, crediting the cast’s intuitive and collaborative energy as well as their director’s touch.

When you see critics this aligned, especially across outlets that don’t often agree, you know something special is happening.

No theatrical release has been announced just yet, but with the wave of glowing reviews, it’s only a matter of time before Erupcja hits theaters or a major streaming platform. And when it does? I’ll be the first in line.

I’m beyond proud of Charli. She has always had an unstoppable work ethic: constantly touring, creating, and shaping pop culture on her own terms. Now she’s stepping into film with the same fearlessness, proving that she can truly do it all.

Charli XCX isn’t just a pop star, she’s a star. Period.
