Charli XCX is taking her artistry to the big screen. The pop icon is set to premiere her new film Erupcja at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, and yes, it’s as explosive as it sounds.

Directed by Pete Ohs, Erupcja tells the story of an “explosive relationship” between a Polish and an American woman named Bethany (Charli) set against the backdrop of Warsaw. The film was secretly shot during the summer of 2024 in Poland, with Charli also stepping into a producer role alongside Ohs, Said Harris, Luke Arreguin, and Josh Godfrey.

Charli told Filmmaker Magazine that she was drawn to the project instantly: “I was hooked from the jump, and I just thought it sounded like a really fun and unique project. And I’ve always liked to approach my creative endeavors in a way that feels truly unique, and this definitely felt like that. So, I was kind of in and wanting to know more.”

Reflecting on the characters, she added: “When you’re 16, you kind of romanticize your feelings and thoughts to this point where it’s kind of like, is it even real? I kind of think that’s what was going on with the characters and kind of with us when we were shooting as well. I also believe that after 10 days, there was this very logistical thing, and Bethany is gone.”

While Charli has been on film sets before, this project gave her a new perspective: “I am by no means a pro or anything, but I have experienced a few different film sets, and the one thing I definitely take away from this experience with Pete is the level of spontaneity that comes with making a ‘Pete Ohs movie,’ and, yes, it is akin to making a painting or making a song.”

She closed by reflecting on the whirlwind: “I’m happy that I got to have that experience in what was one of the most hectic summers of my life. Getting these 10 days in Warsaw was really special and something that I’ll always remember.”

And Charli isn’t stopping at Erupcja. She’ll also be at TIFF for the premiere of Sacrifice, a chaotic and mystical thriller about a star-studded charity gala that takes a deadly turn, co-starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Evans, and Salma Hayek. Double the films, double the pop star power.
