Mallrat by Casey Garnsey

Australian singer-songwriter Mallrat has returned with her highly anticipated new album, “Light hit my face like a straight right,” released today. Known for her dreamy, genre-blending sound, Grace (real name Grace Shaw) continues to evolve as an artist, delivering an emotionally rich and sonically diverse record that captures moments of introspection, euphoria, and everything in between.

For me, this album holds a deeply personal significance. In July of 2023, I lost my Mémère—my grandmother—and listening to this record makes me think of her so much. Music has a way of attaching itself to our emotions, bringing back memories and helping us process grief, love, and everything in between. This record feels like a soundtrack to the emotions I’ve been carrying, reminding me that songs can have different meanings for everyone who listens.

Be sure to order your physical copy of the new record, along with exclusive merch and a sick glow in the dark vinyl online here. You can catch Grace on the road in the coming months too, ticket info and dates can be found here!

Love you forever, Grace!

My Darling, My Angel’: A perfect album opener, I love it. The song is very mystical, very urban like and I love the different layers and sounds she used on this one.

Pavement’: Told to break yourself, don’t talk, save your breath,” ugh probably my favorite song on the record, or era at least! This song is something that I put on when I need a reminder that everything is going to be okay, no matter what. We can be our own worst enemies, but we have to remember to save our breath and give some extra love to ourselves!

Something for Somebody’: I’ve never been in a relationship, but this song made me think of finding that person in life that helps you get through something. maybe not a relationship, but I think we have friends like this too.

Virtue’: This song reminds me of Grace’s earlier days, like ‘Tokyo Drift’ era, and it’s great. The sounds are epic and her/the background vocals done on the track are so mythical.

Defibrillator’: You know those songs that hit so deep they kind of feel like an attack in a sense, lol, in a good way obviously though? Well, that’s this one. Music is so powerful and so relatable, with real things that have happened or you have felt. This one is definitely going to be on repeat.

The Light Streams In and Hits My Face’: Seconds long, but with an impression that stayed with me even after the album finished included this song. It felt like this song was the intro to a newer Grace in a sense, a new chapter. Maybe I’m wrong, but it felt like it was leading into the new music below. Could be a reach though!

Hocus Pocus’: I remember when this song came out this past October, I was actually watching the movie of the same title when I saw Grace released it, lol! This song makes me think of Halloween time for that reason, but it’s definitely one of those songs you can sit back and smoke to too.

Hideaway’: Ever have a crush that makes you feel just so euphoric and you want to protect it forever and ever? Well, same. I love this song a lot, the tone of it is super different and I can’t wait to see this one live.

Love Songs / Heart Strings’: This gave me vibes like “Wish On An Eyelash,” one of my other favorite songs from Grace. It’s very cute and made me want to spin in circles with my eyes closed thinking of a crush lol.

Ray of Light’: When Grace released this song, I was sooo excited. It was her first single for the new era and it brought the perfect tone to set what the album would be like. Unique, iconic, and just down right legendary.

The Worst Thing I Would Ever Do’: This song made me want to get in my car, turn the volume all the way up, and just drive. I don’t know where to, but it’s one of those songs that’ll have you do a lot of reflecting. Very emotional for sure, but a must listen on the album.

Horses’: I don’t think there’s been a time when I’ve been able to listen to this song without tears coming to my eyes. Anytime I have it on I feel like she’s with me.
