DL: Anna, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me. You’ve had quite a busy year! How are you?
AD: Thanks for thinking of me! I’m great, happy to be back out in the world and working on fun stuff with exciting people.
DL: You recently wrapped up Dancing With The Stars. How was that? You won in my opinion, obviously.
AD: I think I did, too.
DL: Was there anything challenging about filming the show? I can’t imagine the rehearsal hours you put in.
AD: I think a lot of people don’t realize how much work goes into making the show. Aside from daily rehearsals, there are fittings, master interviews, camera blocking days, etc. I did have a lot of fun most of the time. Everyone on the team is very nice and welcoming. My partner Ezra was great and made sure I got a great workout.
DL: Halloween was beyond iconic with so many costumes that paid tribute to you. What did you think about all the pictures and videos people were posting?
AD: I was so thrilled to see so many tags and mentions from all kinds of different people who obviously resonated with my performance. It’s so great to feel seen and understood.
DL: Let’s talk about your artwork; the pieces are beautiful. How did it feel when they debuted at Miami Art Week back in 2022?
AD: Thank you! It was sort of bittersweet—I wish I could’ve been there in person and able to see everything and meet everyone in real life.
DL: Your work seems to blend sophistication with a bit of satire, and of course major iconic-ness. How would you describe your artistic style, and what are some sources of inspiration?
AD: My main and only inspiration is myself, obviously. I took a Fashion Illustration course while at Parsons in Paris, and fashion drawings I saw growing up are a big reference throughout my work.
DL: You’ve taken to it with such intensity. What does art mean to you, and would you say it’s helped shape who you are today?
AD: I created the majority of my drawings while in detention—it was the best outlet for creativity I could’ve asked for at the time and helped me so much dealing with the drab reality of day-to-day life incarcerated.
DL: What does your creative process look like—do you have any rituals, routines, or favorite settings that help you get into the right headspace for creating?
AD: I like to listen to music. I think I have an eclectic taste, but during that time especially, I was listening to a lot of hip hop.
DL: Is there a certain piece that you’re most proud of?
AD: I put a lot of effort into creating “Vanilla ICE.” It’s a bit deeper and less light-hearted than my other pieces.
DL: You have a huge following within the LGBTQ+ community, particularly the gay community. How does that love and support make you feel?
AD: The best fans I could ask for, obviously!
DL: Gay culture loves icons who are unapologetically themselves. What parts of your personality or journey do you think resonate most with the community?
AD: I hope that down the road the main thing that people will take away from my story is how I created something positive out of something negative. My story is about second chances, learning from one’s mistakes, courage to rebuild and reinvent oneself, and not letting the missteps of the past derail you.
DL: The community often celebrates resilience and self-expression—two qualities you embody. Do you feel there’s a unique connection between your story and that of this community?
AD: Everyone makes mistakes, big and small. The secret is to learn from your past experiences and adapt to the new reality. Oftentimes the worst experiences are just a stepping stone on a path to something bigger and better. The worst thing one could do is remain stagnant and be afraid to fail.
DL: If you could collaborate on an art piece or project specifically celebrating the gay community, what do you think it would look like? I feel like it would be unlike any other.
AD: I have so many exciting ideas—stay tuned! 🙂
DL: What are some surprising hobbies or interests you have that people might not expect?
AD: I like to play tennis, and I’m fairly good at Scrabble. I also took up resin just a couple weeks ago after my friend Kris brought over his kit, and we’ve been having a lot of fun making table tops and ashtrays from scratch.
DL: Fashion is another area where you’ve caught people’s attention. What role does style play in your self-expression?
AD: I always loved fashion. It is currently my primary focus, and I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve been working on.
DL: What advice would you give to someone trying to embrace their true self, regardless of public opinion?
AD: In fifty to a hundred years, we all probably will be largely forgotten. Don’t waste your time worrying about other people’s opinions—make the best out of your time here now and live your life the way you want (as long as it’s not against the law!).
DL: There’s no doubt that you’re an icon, so I have to know: what’s next for Anna?
AD: I have so many exciting things in the works, amongst them a documentary and a fashion project. We’ll have to catch up again in a few months so I can give you a proper update! Xx
